Abstract

By the dental prophylaxis as an essential procedure for prevention of oral diseases, dentin surface could be abraded or surface roughened which have been considered as an important and harmful side effect. The purpose of this study was the evaluation of the effect of particle size, speed, and time to the relative abrasion rate and roughness of human dentin. Premolars which had been extracted from teenaged patient for the reason of orthodontic treatment were collected and embedded in resin, and its surface were abraded until to exposure the dentin surface with regular areas and flat surfaces. After being done prophylaxis using above mentioned some variables, abrasion rate and surface roughness of each treated dentin surfaces were calculated from profilometric graphs output from Profilometer.
Changes of abrasion rate and surface roughness by the increase of each variables and the relationship of linear regressions were evaluated statistically. The obtained result were as follow:
1. Speed of rotation less than 4000 rpm did not occur the statistical significant differences on abrasion rate.
2. On the aspect of time fore prophylaxis, 10 second and 20 second groups did not show .the significant differences, however experimental groups of 40 seconds and 80
seconds exhibited the significant increase of abrasion rate.
3. Surface roughness were only increased by using larger particle size, not by the faster speed or by the longer time.
4. Increase of abrasion rate had the linear relations with the increase of particle size, speed, and time, and especially the effect of particle size was significant.
